Roosevelt Ellis told the Navasota City Council his daughter was stopped for a vehicle defect and he says officers restrained him and prevented him from recording; he asked council to investigate and cited open-records requests and body-worn camera footage as evidence.
During the public comment period on June 23, resident Roosevelt Ellis told the Navasota City Council he went to the scene when his daughter was stopped for a left-turn signal and a brake-light defect and said he was physically restrained by officers after attempting to record the traffic stop.
Ellis said Officer Hutto conducted the stop and that three additional officers arrived; Ellis said officers prevented him from recording and “grabbed me,” leaving him with injuries on his left arm. He said he has submitted an Open Records request for body-worn camera footage and has filed a complaint with the police department and asked the council to review the incident. “I need something to be done,” Ellis said during his remarks.
Mayor and council acknowledged the comment; Ellis said he has video evidence from his daughter and himself and asked the council to pursue the matter with the police department.
