District presents Patriot Award, introduces staff promotions and new hires

The Desert Sands Unified School District recognized employees and introduced newly promoted staff at the June 24 board meeting.
Greg Peck, a volunteer with the Department of Defense’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, presented the Patriot Award to La Quinta Middle School Principal Kristen Wood on behalf of Captain Jared Goldman, United States Army, who is deployed. Peck read a letter from Captain Goldman thanking Wood and the district for their support and asking for prayers as he serves. Peck described the Patriot Award as recognition for employers who support Guard and Reserve members.
The board and attendees extended gratitude to Captain Goldman for his service and congratulated Principal Wood. “For without her unwavering love, dedication, and commitment, this call would not be met,” Peck read from the letter signed by Captain Jared Goldman.
The board also introduced several recently promoted and newly hired employees. Erica Barragan was introduced as the district’s new executive specialist in the superintendent’s office. The board noted Barragan’s previous roles in executive support, her bachelor’s degree in human resources management and that she is pursuing a master’s degree in project management; Barragan thanked family members in attendance and said she is “excited to be a part of Desert Sands.”
Ashley Bautista was introduced as a new school-based mental health therapist associate. Trustees noted her prior internship with Desert Sands Unified and her background working with local crisis and school-based programs; Bautista thanked supervisors, family and colleagues and said, “It’s a true honor to be here tonight and standing alongside such inspiring leaders.”
Board members thanked the new employees and congratulated Principal Wood and Captain Goldman. The recognitions were ceremonial and required no board action.
