At a West Swanzey meeting, a public commenter and a childcare representative discussed concerns about the layout and staffing needs of a childcare program operating in an older building.
A commenter said removing interior walls would change staffing needs and costs: "The walls should have been taken down. And so now I'm listening to a heavy staff because you'll have to put a heavier staff on because you'll have to man 3 different rooms versus you could have 1 teacher and cut your costs on your staff," the speaker said.
A provider or representative replied with operational context, saying the program moved into the building in June 2022 and referenced a licensor named Amelia when asked about licensing oversight. The representative also said facility modifications and licensing conversations had occurred with the licensing authority.
Speakers raised concerns that the building is older and may require more investment to safely support increased staffing and children. The discussion was part of public comment and informational responses; meeting records show no formal permitting, variance, or vote on structural changes during this session.
Residents requested follow-up and clearer written information about licensing status, staffing ratios required by the licensor, and whether planned structural changes (such as removing interior walls) had been reviewed and approved by licensing authorities.
