Jackson County legislators introduced an ordinance May 22 to adopt the county’s annual budget and set appropriations for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2025; the measure was referred to the Legislature’s Budget Committee for review, the chair said.
The ordinance introduced from the floor includes previously authorized American Rescue Plan Act allocations from county fund 081 and fund 082, and copies were distributed to members and posted to the legislative packet for online participants, the introducing legislator said.
Why it matters: The annual budget ordinance would set legal appropriations for county agencies and subdivisions for the 2025 fiscal year and incorporates designated ARPA funds already referenced in prior legislation, meaning committee review will shape final spending and any formal adoption timeline.
During the meeting, Legislator Franklin noted members had been awaiting the budget ordinance. “We were anxiously awaiting the budget ordinance, but haven't seen it just yet,” Franklin said. A legislator who introduced the budget from the floor told colleagues that hard copies were provided to those present and that an electronic copy was available to online attendees: “So, that is what I would like to submit under new business.”
The chair said the clerk would assign an ordinance number and then announced, “I’m going to go ahead and assign that to the Budget Committee.” The transcript indicates the clerk did not have an immediate ordinance number and that the next legislative meeting was scheduled for Friday, May 23 at 10 a.m. at the Jackson County Courthouse, second floor.
Procedural items at the May 22 session were brief: the Legislature took roll (eight present, one absent), approved the journal by voice vote, and adjourned after referring the budget ordinance to committee. No hearings, committee reports, communications from the County Executive’s Office, or consent-agenda items were listed on the agenda.
What’s next: The ordinance will be considered by the Budget Committee; the clerk is expected to provide the official ordinance number and any committee meeting dates in follow-up notices.
