CHSD 128 staff told the board they convened a group of students and staff to develop ethical, responsible AI guidelines for classroom and professional use; the guidelines will be shared again with students and staff and revisited as state guidance evolves.
District staff reported on June 23 that Community High School District 128 convened a team of students and staff to draft guidance on ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence, and that the board will see those guidelines again as the district refines its electronic-access policy.
A staff presenter said the group—including teachers, staff and students—developed guidance aimed at allowing AI to assist academic and professional work while promoting responsible use. The presenter said the district intentionally avoided prescriptive rules tied to specific software or hardware, noting, “We don't try to pigeon ourselves into, you know, certain, software, certain hardware. We really try to, you know, allow if things grow over time and change.”
The presenter added that Illinois has not yet issued comprehensive statewide guidance and that the district used existing guidance from other levels and the expertise of local teachers and students to produce its own recommendations. The guidelines will be shared with staff and students before the school year and revisited as AI tools evolve.
Board members were directed to resources (a May presentation and slide deck posted to BoardDocs) for more detail. The items described were presented as discussion; no policy adoption occurred on June 23.
