Resident asks Yelm Council to consider allowing golf carts; council directs staff to investigate

Gabriel Leon Guerrero, a new resident, told the Yelm City Council on June 24 he had researched whether the city allows public use of golf carts and asked the council to consider making them legal for local streets.
"I was wondering if there had ever been any talk or thought of, zoning the city to be able to allow public use of golf carts," Guerrero said, citing charm, reduced congestion and potential uses including travel to the senior center and local businesses.
The mayor responded that Yelm does not currently allow golf carts but that the city could investigate the idea: "However, that is something that Cody could absolutely look into." Council Member Crossman noted that the council passed an ordinance last year allowing certain wheeled all-terrain vehicles and suggested staff compare that ordinance to golf-cart rules used elsewhere.
Council Member K (who said she would investigate) said she believed golf carts may need windshields, mirrors and turn signals to operate on city streets and that she would check with the police chief. Public Services Director Cody told Guerrero staff would follow up and provided an opportunity for Guerrero to leave contact information.
No ordinance or formal action was adopted at the meeting; council members instructed staff to research regulatory, licensing and safety requirements and to report back to the resident and the council.
