Pleasant Valley SD receives update on high school renovation; districtwide facilities work continues

Mike Sainer, a project representative for CHA, presented a status update on Pleasant Valley High School’s renovation during the district work session Wednesday, saying demolition and interior mechanical work are underway and that multiple building additions and site utilities are being installed.
The presentation covered interior demolition in the cafeteria, center floor, auditorium and library and installation of HVAC, domestic water and new electrical work. "We've had ongoing invasion under DEP protocols and supervision," Sainer said, and added that contractors were completing ceiling work and getting systems ready so spaces can be closed up and turned over. He said exterior work includes topsoil stripping, construction of infiltration basins for stormwater management and foundation preparation for three additions labeled A, B and C.
District officials said site work will continue through the summer, with the bus parking lot and several driveways scheduled to be returned to the district "at the beginning of the school year." A district staff member noted the project remains "on schedule." One board member asked whether the schedule changed; Sainer said some flooring work was postponed to later in the season to ensure proper HVAC protection and avoid damage to finishes.
The board’s finance director reported the district’s capital reserve had an available balance of $20,788,344.36 as of April and said interest earned in May was rolled into construction costs, which will reduce the amount needed from bond proceeds for the high school project. The 2018, 2023 and 2024 bond accounts were reported with available balances of zero; the 2025 bond funds were deposited after settling last Wednesday, the finance director said.
Staff also reviewed other summer facility work across the district: carpet removal and replacement at several sites, large furniture deliveries to the middle school and other buildings, signage updates for the middle school, and a library/STEM room reconfiguration. Custodial and maintenance staff were singled out by multiple speakers for assistance in moving furniture and preparing rooms. One administrator said deliveries include multiple truckloads scheduled over the coming days and that staff are staging furniture into classrooms.
Discussion focused on sequencing and coordination: board members pressed staff on turning key instructional spaces over before school starts and on preserving finishes by delaying certain trades until HVAC protection is in place. No formal motion or vote was taken; staff were directed to continue coordination and to report progress at upcoming meetings.
The district said it will post project updates and related documents on its website and on the high school web page to keep parents and staff informed.
