Fire department to offer 'Fully Involved' academy for residents with special needs

The Hoffman Estates Fire Department announced it will host a six-week citizen fire academy tailored for residents with special needs and disabilities, ages 14 to 35, beginning Wednesday evening, Sept. 3.
Fire Department leadership said the program — called the Fully Involved Fire Academy — will run Wednesday evenings for six weeks and conclude with a graduation at Station 24 during the department open house. The department is partnering with the Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA) for registration and program delivery; the fire department said those interested can obtain information directly from the department before registration opens through NWSRA.
The fire department noted it is not aware of another fire department offering a similar program, a claim attributed to the department’s speaker in the meeting. Trustees and meeting participants praised the initiative. The item was reported during the fire department’s monthly report and was received and filed; no formal board action was required.
