Hoover police chief to run for mayor; assistant chief named acting chief during campaign leave

The Hoover Police Department chief announced at the June 23 City Council meeting that he will qualify tomorrow to run for mayor and, under state law, will take a leave of absence once he qualifies until the election is certified.
“I will be naming Norma McDuffie, our assistant chief, as the acting chief effective tomorrow at 05:00,” the chief said in remarks to the council and public. He described his time in the department as more than 40 years as an officer and about 20 years as chief, and thanked city staff and council members for their support. “I've been blessed to have the opportunity to work with the men and women ... the finest group of men and women that wear a uniform,” he said.
Assistant Chief Norma McDuffie appeared before the council with the chief and accepted the temporary acting role; both said department operations would continue under current protocols.
Council members and staff offered the chief and Assistant Chief McDuffie their thanks and support in the transition. The chief reiterated that the leave and acting appointment are required by state election law and administrative practice and that he expects to return after the election-certification process if appropriate.
