Town staff told the Select Board that Spectrum and other providers are pursuing a hybrid broadband solution for Hampden that would aim to deliver symmetrical upload and download speeds by early 2026, and that the town’s prior plan for a fully municipal fiber network has been postponed while providers upgrade infrastructure.
The Broadband Committee has continued to exist but, officials said, Spectrum "stepped up" with an offer that could provide higher upload speeds without the town borrowing for a full fiber buildout. The Town Administrator said the vendor timeline is currently estimated for January 2026 and that Spectrum will upgrade head-end equipment; customers with legacy equipment will receive replacement boxes as needed.
Board members flagged the committee’s role in tracking provider commitments and potential grant funding that might change the town's options. "Unless there's some huge grants that come out of the woodwork... I don't anticipate that's gonna happen," the Town Administrator said; the board agreed to monitor developments and revisit municipal options only if significant outside funding becomes available.
No formal procurement or capital-commitment action was taken; the broadband committee will continue to coordinate with providers and report back to the Select Board.
