Council approves Sand Dunes wastewater blower motor repair contract after surge damage

Moses Lake City Council approved a contract Tuesday to replace failed blower‑motor components at the Sand Dunes wastewater treatment facility following a January power surge that damaged controllers and variable frequency drives.
Public Works explained the immediate need: staff executed emergency repairs in January to restore plant function and now request authority to buy replacement VFDs, controllers, radios and related interfaces with long manufacturer lead times (estimated 4–6 months). ‘‘Why we’re asking now is the lead time on some of this stuff is 4 to 6 months,’’ a city presenter told the council, adding that ordering now increases the chance of completing installation before winter.
The city has submitted claims to insurance and is coordinating with Grant County PUD on possible reimbursement; staff said final insurance and PUD contributions were not yet known. Council voted to approve the repair contract so staff can order parts and schedule installation.
