SCRTD to launch vanpool to Truth or Consequences for veterans; $50 per rider monthly reported

The South Central Regional Transit District said it will begin a vanpool service Monday between Las Cruces and Truth or Consequences to provide a morning commute for veterans’ health-care staff and others, Executive Director David Armijo told the board.
"SCRTD will launch a new vanpool service on Monday," Armijo said, adding the service will run round trips of about 150 miles and is scheduled to depart around 6:30 a.m. for an approximately 8:30 a.m. arrival. The district plans a 15-passenger van with five registered riders.
Armijo said the district subsidized part of the vehicle and start-up costs and is using vehicles purchased through the Department of Finance and Administration and other grant funds. He described the posted fare structure as a total monthly fare of about $250, which breaks down to roughly $50 per rider per month.
The district will provide insurance, a fuel card and requires the driver to maintain a daily mileage log and weekly ridership reports, Armijo said. The New Mexico State Veterans Home is a local partner for the route; board members discussed pickup locations and noted riders will park at Ashley Furniture and be picked up near Mesilla Valley Hospital.
Councilor Yvonne Flores asked about the terminus and pickup arrangements; operations staff said riders will be picked up at Mesilla Valley Hospital and park at the Ashley Furniture lot prior to departure. Armijo described the vanpool as a model for rural mobility and said the district hopes to replicate similar services across southern New Mexico.
No formal board vote was required; the vanpool launch was presented as an operational start and staff said they will post details to the district website.
