Deltona inspects storm drains, replaces leaking pipe joint and repairs sidewalks to reduce flood risk

City of Deltona stormwater and public-works crews inspected storm-drain structures, replaced a leaking pipe joint on Derby near Austin and repaired sidewalks to reduce flood risk and keep pedestrians safe, city staff said.

The work is part of several public-works projects highlighted in the city manager’s monthly report aimed at keeping neighborhoods safer during storms. Jason, who identified himself as a member of the city’s stormwater division, said inspectors look for “erosion around the box, around the grate, any damage done to the inside or outside,” and for collapsed pipes or blockages that would prevent normal flow.

Luke, a heavy equipment operator with the Stormwater Division, described on-site repair work for a leaking joint on a pipe at Derby near Austin: “We’re gonna do our best to excavate as much as we can and then replace the joint and rewrap it and backfill and repair and call it a day.” Julio Ramos, a concrete operator, said crews were repairing sidewalks “so pedestrian can work safely.”

Inspectors said typical checks include pulling the grate to inspect inside the concrete box, clearing plant growth, checking for cracks or holes, and confirming that pipes and laterals are free of debris. The joint-repair work on Derby involved excavation, replacement and rewrap of the leaking joint, then backfilling and surface repair.

City staff framed the inspections and repairs as preventive maintenance to keep drainage systems functioning during rain events and to remove hazards to pedestrians.

The city manager’s report grouped these field activities with other public-works items focused on flooding and safety.
