Vice Mayor Kelly and other commissioners said they support the concept but opposed earmarking $40,000 now before the budget process is complete. Commissioner Kelly said committing future funds at this stage could set a precedent where multiple commissioners allocate line items into next year’s budget before the city’s workshops. Commissioner Irvin noted other communications channels — including a restored Channel 77 broadcast service — and suggested the commission discuss communications strategy in the budget process.
After discussion, Commissioner Santiago moved to defer the item until after the budget workshops and one-on-one meetings; the motion passed 5–0. The sponsor said she will pursue private sponsorships and bring a more detailed proposal back to the commission after the city completes budget review and staff briefings.
