Deputy City Manager Tracy Leach told the Coppell City Council on June 24 that the city mailed letters notifying residents and businesses affected by an October cybersecurity incident and that staff are offering free credit-monitoring and resources for recipients. "We were impacted by the cybersecurity event that happened this past October and letters went out last Thursday so residents and businesses have begun to receive those," Leach said.
Leach said the notices follow legal requirements to notify the address listed in compromised records and that some recipients may no longer live in Coppell or may have experienced major life changes since the records were created. She apologized for stress caused by the mailings and explained residents have options for assistance, including a dedicated call center and a city contact for follow-up.
Practical resources Leach provided in the council meeting: a call center at (877) 580-7778 with a unique code printed on each recipient’s letter to reach a fraud specialist; a city contact, Justin Vaughn, at (972) 304-3611 for additional local assistance; and an information page posted at coppelltx.gov/outage with FAQs and enrollment instructions for free credit monitoring. "The call center representative should be able to provide assistance and answers to most of your questions," Leach said.
The council received the update as informational; Leach did not propose additional motions. Staff noted legal obligations to send notices to addresses shown in compromised records and asked residents with questions to use the phone numbers and website provided.
Next steps: affected residents should follow the instructions on the mailed letter to contact the call center or the city representative; staff will continue to make information available on the city outage page and respond to inquiries.
