Mass. public-safety and frontline unions back bill to grant COVID retirement credit for essential workers

Representatives of police, fire and other frontline public employees told the Joint Committee on Public Service that they support legislation to provide a COVID-19 retirement credit for employees who worked in person during the state of emergency.
The witnesses asked the committee to report House Bill 3003, which would create a commission to study awarding a retirement credit, and Senate Bill 1802, which would provide a retirement credit equal to the duration of the state of emergency to eligible essential employees. Testimony described the period of the Massachusetts COVID state of emergency as March 2020 through June 2021.
