Fairhope warns residents of multi‑week road closures as Force Main work continues

Mayor Sullivan told the Fairhope City Council that crews will close multiple blocks of Section Street and surrounding roads over the next six weeks to complete the final tie‑in for the city’s Force Main as part of a broader wastewater upgrade project.
The mayor said the work includes a roundabout and curbing operations that have already closed Veterans Drive and Triangle Drive, and that a closure on Section Street between Oak and Bayou is scheduled for the next day to tie the final phase of the Force Main into the Restore wastewater project.
“We’ve visited with all the businesses along that area, made sure we add some additional signage to let folks know that the businesses and residents along there will remain open, but it's going to be inconvenient for about six weeks,” Mayor Sullivan said. He advised drivers entering downtown to use Fairhope Avenue, Morphy or Nichols and suggested Gaefer as a route to reach businesses near Section Street.
City staff told the council the work is “all shoulder work” for the TAP sidewalks and similar operations, and that short‑term traffic controls will be limited to when concrete trucks are in the lane unloading. The mayor and staff said the timing aims to complete disruptive work before school starts.
Sullivan urged residents routed through neighborhood streets such as Vilana, Ingleside and Gaither to respect posted speed limits. “We’re gonna have additional law enforcement out. They're gonna be enforcing the speed limit laws,” he said, adding that children are out for the summer and motorists should be mindful.
The mayor also reminded residents that the July 4 public events will proceed with adjusted access because parts of the waterfront remain construction zones: the circle will close for pedestrian access later in the day and the pier will close prior to fireworks to keep emergency access clear.
