The Tuscaloosa City Council approved $300,000 in the mayor’s capital projects proposal to extend fiber optic connections to two fire stations that currently lack hardwired links.
Mister Foster told the council the funding would pay to bore about 1.5 miles along McRites Ferry Road to connect the corridor from New Watermelon and McRites Ferry to Fire Station 10, the lakes office and Lake Nickel, and a separate run from the Skyland Boulevard water tower to Fire Station 9 at the entrance to Woodland Forest.
“That $300,000 is for those two projects together,” Mister Foster said, explaining the runs would connect the final two fire stations without a hardwired connection and improve public‑safety communications.
Council motioned and approved the capital projects recommendation by voice vote.
Staff and council celebrated the action immediately after the vote; no additional budget amendments were indicated in the discussion. The Projects Committee will carry the item forward as part of the mayor’s capital proposal.
