The Tuscaloosa City Council voted to deny demolition of the structure at 2216 Loop Road and to order demolition of the structure at 3313 Sixteenth Street.
Urban Development staff told the council that the property at 2216 Loop Road had been condemned Oct. 16, 2024, and carried 48 housing-code violations. Staff reported the new owner had completed the entire exterior of the structure and recommended the council vote no to condemn; the owner was not present. After the council vote, the clerk recorded: "No. No. No. No. No." and the motion to demolish failed.
By contrast, staff reported the property at 3313 Sixteenth Street had been condemned Feb. 4, 2025, with 49 housing-code violations and that staff recommended demolition of the main house and all accessory structures. The owner was contacted and aware demolition costs would be charged back to the owner. No speakers appeared at the public hearing for or against the demolition. The council voted to order demolition for the 16th Street property.
Both items were recorded as public hearings when introduced. The council27s actions reflect staff recommendations: a denial of demolition for 2216 Loop Road and an order to demolish at 3313 Sixteenth Street.
