Montgomery County Historical Society seeks same county funding to sustain exhibits and school programs

The Montgomery County Historical Society asked the county commission to fund the organization at the same level as the prior year to support rotating exhibits, preservation work and expanded education programs.
Executive Director Tisha Rhodes told commissioners county support in last year's budget allowed the society to create on-site exhibits including "Constructing the Capital City," "Montgomery during the Nineteenth Century" and the current "Commerce, Connection and Culture" exhibit. Rhodes said county funds also paid to pave the museum's rear parking area, improving access for visitors with mobility issues.
Rhodes said a recent Alabama Historical Commission grant will fund a permanent Third Floor exhibit telling the story of the Fye (Five) Picket House, built in 1837, and allow a local storyteller to visit K-6 classrooms. "We intend to serve 7,200 children over the next two years," Rhodes said, describing a four-part coloring book and curriculum tied to the exhibits.
Dr. Richard Bailey, who spoke in support of the society, described the organization's role preserving local history and cited past partnerships, including the unveiling of a historical marker for Victor Tulane and participation in restoration work for Lincoln Cemetery.
The society requested that the commission consider funding at last year's level to continue exhibits, events and educational outreach. Commissioners did not take a formal vote during the presentation but thanked the society for its work.
