Metuchen construction committee reports staggered school completion dates; public raised traffic and playground concerns

The Metuchen Board of Education construction committee reported progress on renovation and addition projects at all four district schools during its committee report at the June 24 public meeting, and committee members relayed public concerns about traffic and playground siting at Moss Elementary.
Committee chair Mr. Glassberg told the board that work at Metuchen High School is on track for completion by December, with structural steel nearly complete in the new gym area and cafeteria addition finished. "At Metuchen High School, the entire project is expected to be completed by December," he said, and he added that air conditioning at the high school is expected to be operational by mid-September once switch gear arrives.
Glassberg reported school-by-school completion estimates: Edgar School expected to be completed by Aug. 7 (including air conditioning, with temporary switch gear in use), Campbell School expected by Sept. 1 pending a PSE&G utility pole, and Moss expected to be ready by Dec. 1 with site work to be finished over the summer. He said a transformer was expected to be installed at Moss in the coming week.
Public comments during the committee meeting raised traffic concerns on Simpson and Amboy avenues and asked about the Moss playground location and bus and car loops. Glassberg said committee members heard those questions and urged continued patience as systems are commissioned and adjusted after equipment is energized.
He also said committee discussion in closed session covered change orders for Epic Construction Company and M and M; "currently both of their change orders that have been approved are below the threshold and all within the budget that we currently have set," Glassberg said. The committee also discussed removal of a soil pile outside Metuchen High School. The committee will meet in closed session July 21 and next open meeting Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Metuchen High School library media center; it will also be at the farmers market Aug. 16 for public updates.
The construction update was informational; no board vote on project scope or new funding was taken at the June 24 meeting.
