City crews report hydro plant maintenance, hood replacement and potential generator service

Public works staff reported maintenance needs at the city's hydroelectric facility and other water-system items, including a hood at risk of developing holes and a generator that occasionally requires electrode cleaning.
John Balz told the council that the hydro hood has suffered sand abrasion and pinholes; a vendor from Washington will X-ray and design a replacement hood. Balz said the assessment visit cost is about $14,000 and the full fabrication cost is outstanding. He noted the work was less costly than flying a vendor from England, where the hood had been fabricated originally.
Balz also said the standby generator occasionally accumulates oil on electrodes and may require removal and service; downtime for that service could be “a couple of weeks,” depending on the vendor’s backlog. Crews also addressed recurring pipe-band corrosion and have switched to a non–cast-iron band material that holds up better in local soils.
Public works described road dusting and chip-seal preparations on Second South, repaired a failing manhole ahead of chip-seal work, and noted minor leftover material from a recent city cleanup.
Ending: Public works will host the Washington vendor to evaluate the hood this week, plan generator servicing as needed, and continue road and utility maintenance.
