Gulf County holds first reading to renew 6-cent local option gas tax; commissioners stress it is a renewal

County staff read for the record a proposed ordinance to continue a 6¢ per gallon local option gas tax under Florida Statute 336. The draft would reauthorize the county’s local option gas tax for a 30-year period and provide for distribution of proceeds between the county and municipalities in accordance with state statute or an interlocal agreement.
Mr. Novak said the ordinance would continue a tax the county has assessed previously (Ordinance 8904 and later extended under Ordinance 2009-06) and that it is not a new tax. During discussion a commissioner reiterated that proceeds are used exclusively for transportation expenditures as defined by the statute and that the county’s portion is responsible for road construction and maintenance; county receipts were described in rough terms during the meeting as generating about $300,000 a year for the county.
The proposed ordinance was advertised for a second reading and possible adoption at the July 22 meeting; the ordinance will take effect upon official acknowledgement from the Florida secretary of state after adoption.
