Council approves change order to upsize well motor and pump at Water Plant 2

Staff explained testing at the newly drilled well showed lower static water elevations than predicted by the hydrogeologist’s pre-drilling study. To achieve the planned operating efficiency and reduce long-term wear, staff recommended upgrading from a 60-horsepower pump to a 75-horsepower pump. The change order increases the project cost by $20,500 and adds 14 days for equipment lead time.
Council members asked why the difference was not detected earlier; staff said the site-specific well testing and seasonal water-level variation made the difference apparent only after construction. Staff reported test production rates consistent with expectations and described contingency plans if a pump fails, including rental options to maintain supply.
A motion to approve the change order passed by majority vote. Staff will proceed with procurement and schedule the installation; the project remains on track for the final start-up once the motor and pump are installed and electrical work completed.
