Board approves stadium license to LA Sports Club and $73,447 turf shock-pad change order from capital funds

The La Cañada Unified School District governing board approved a one-year license agreement for use of the LCHS stadium by LA Sports Club (LASC) and approved a change order to replace shock pads under the stadium turf after contractors found more damage than expected.
Melissa, speaking for staff, said the district received two responsive bids for stadium use and recommended continuing the license with LASC, a local 501(c)(3) youth soccer organization that drew roughly 100 players from La Cañada and surrounding communities last season. The approved license covers Saturday use from noon to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 7 to 10 a.m. (staff said LASC has been flexible when the district needs field access for school events).
Separately, staff reported that during replacement of synthetic turf at LCHS Stadium the contractor (FieldTurf USA) found more than the expected approximately 5,000 square feet of shock pads were unusable. FieldTurf recommended full replacement of the pads for long-term performance. The contract increase is $113,000; because the original contract contained a $40,000 allowance, the net additional cost to the district is $73,447.08, staff said.
Board members asked whether the extra cost would come from the general fund; staff confirmed the money will be paid from the district’s capital outlay field and turf budget and not the general fund or bond funds. Staff also said the district will attempt to recover some value by selling reusable sections of the removed material back to other users or the manufacturer.
Both the license and the turf change order were approved by motion. Board members and staff framed the turf replacement as necessary to ensure a safe, long-lasting playing surface ahead of the fall football season.
