Bedford County accepts Shentel make-ready award, convenes Broadband Authority session

Planning and broadband staff told supervisors the county has been a recurring recipient of state “make ready” broadband grants; county staff said Bedford County was awarded $1,678,000 under the latest round. The grant was described as part of the Virginia Make Ready initiative administered through the state broadband program.
During the consent discussion, Supervisor questions prompted Chair action to call the Broadband Authority into session so that the broadband-specific item could be considered alongside the board meeting. No separate objection was raised during the consent vote, and the consent agenda passed by roll call.
County staff said the Shentel award is the final round of the state program for which the county has applied and that Bedford has been among the program's larger beneficiaries. The board did not request further changes to the consent item during the meeting.
The broadband item was handled on the consent agenda and will proceed under the terms of the state program and the county's agreements with service providers.
