The City of Knoxville Design Review Board approved a certificate of appropriateness on June 18 for three illuminated wall signs and one illuminated monument sign at 550 Main Street.
The board accepted staff’s recommendation that the proposed signs replace existing wall signs, contain slightly revised branding and modestly larger sizes, and not increase the level of illumination. Lindsay, a planning staff member, told the board the sign designs “are consistent with the existing signs and the contemporary building” and that the visual scale is appropriate given the building’s height. Britney Green, the applicant representing Excel Signs LLC, introduced herself during the public presentation.
Staff placed the project in the boulevard district context and recommended approval because the types and scale of signs align with the design guidelines for that district. The board moved to approve the certificate of appropriateness per staff recommendation; a motion and second were called and the item carried.
The approval covers the replacement of existing wall signs and installation of the monument sign, under the conditions discussed by staff. The board did not request additional conditions beyond staff’s recommendation.
The board’s action allows the applicant to proceed with the replacement and installation as presented to staff, subject to the standard administrative follow-up and any building permit reviews required by Plans Review and Inspections.
