Sheriff Williams explained the contracts cover housing for inmates from San Saba, Hamilton and “Corio” counties (as presented in the packet) and that the county will charge $75 per day per inmate under the agreement. Commissioners voted to approve the contracts by voice vote; Commissioner Williams moved the motion and Commissioner Sullivan seconded.
The sheriff and several commissioners discussed whether $75 per day would cover the actual cost of housing a prisoner. The sheriff and other speakers noted that per-day costs vary by facility and that some estimates for full incarceration costs can be significantly higher; one figure mentioned in the discussion as an example for state-level cost was $220 per day. The sheriff said the county keeps a limited number of beds for local needs and will continue to manage occupancy based on capacity.
The court also adopted the 2025 sheriff and constable fee schedule, which sets fees for civil process and related services; commissioners noted many fees had already reached statutory maximums. The fee-schedule motion was made by Commissioner Williams and seconded by Commissioner Dan, and the measure passed unanimously.
Sheriff’s office staff said they would return after the meeting with updated contract forms showing corrected county judge names and complete signature pages.
