Board approves interim and emergency teaching authorizations for three staff members

The board approved three personnel items allowing teachers without full state teaching credentials to continue assigned classes for the coming year.

School staff told the board that one item (listed as item 7) seeks approval for a teacher — identified in the meeting as Matt Maui — who holds a social science credential but has demonstrated the ability to teach physical education. The board was also asked to approve interim credentials for teachers currently finishing credential programs and emergency authorizations for educators working toward English Learner Development (ELD) authorization, subject to county approval of the emergency authorization forms.

The board’s action keeps in place the district practice of approving interim and emergency credential requests when employees are actively pursuing required authorizations. Staff said they anticipate one interim teacher for the next year and noted that numbers could change over the summer as hiring continues. Board materials filed with the meeting included the staff explanations and the county emergency authorization forms that must be completed and approved for teachers to be assigned ELD duties.

Discussion by board members was brief and procedural. A motion to approve the three items was made and seconded; members voting were recorded and the items passed with seven yes votes and zero no votes among members present.

The approvals cover only authorization to teach pending completion of formal credentials and do not alter the district’s credentialing requirements. County approval remains a precondition for any emergency ELD authorizations, and staff said the district will submit the required forms for any teacher receiving an emergency or interim authorization.
