Newberg SD wins $684,000 in summer-learning grants to expand programs and devices

District staff told the board the combined $684,000 will be braided with federal summer-school funds to support high school, elementary and preschool–through–12 summer programming at Edwards, plus reading and math interventions at Mountain View Middle School and Chehalem Valley Middle School. Staff said Ewing Young will provide rural-focused offerings in July and August.
“Nate, staff member, said, ‘we were able to receive our full allocation from ODE of $604,000,’” according to meeting remarks. Staff said the high school program was held the final week of the regular school year and that the Edwards site will run the larger preschool–12 program in July, with additional middle‑school sessions in August. The district expects to serve “between 4 and 500 students,” staff reported.
Officials said funds will also pay for curriculum updates and a limited refresh of student devices: new Chromebooks and iPads for students participating in summer classes. Staff attributed the district’s selection for additional ESD passthrough funds to the district’s established summer program and demonstrated year‑over‑year student gains on pre‑ and post‑assessments.
A board member thanked Jillian, staff member, for quick work to deploy the funds after the notice arrived late in the school year. No formal board action was required; the grants were discussed as part of the informational reports during the meeting.
The district said it will continue to monitor attendance and learning outcomes and report back to the board on program results and device distribution plans.
