Plano high school students urge council to engage youth and explain city government

Members of Politics for Teens from Plano West High School asked councilmembers to visit classes and help educate peers about city government and voting ahead of their first opportunity to vote.
Three rising seniors from Plano West Senior High School — William Peters, Aiden Way and Danielle Rotman — spoke during the public comments period on June 24 for the group Politics for Teens.
William Peters introduced the group and said its goal is to increase voter turnout and political participation among young people; Peters said Politics for Teens runs nonpartisan education sessions and peer discussions on current issues so students develop knowledge and opinions before they vote. Aiden Way described the group’s activities, including hosting mock council meetings and inviting elected officials to speak to students, and asked councilmembers to participate in future school events to help young people understand the city council’s direct impact on parks, roads and other municipal services.
The students provided contact information and asked councilmembers to reach out to schedule classroom visits or speaking events. The comments were informational and no council action was taken at the meeting.
