The Miami Lakes Economic Development Committee confirmed plans to hold a business boot camp in September and discussed budget and venue options.
Committee members said the boot camp was planned for September 26 and that the program budget would be increased to $5,000 in the coming fiscal year. One member summarized the change: “we are going to up the budget of the boot camp up to 5 k,” noting the prior line had been $2,000 plus seminar funds.
For the current fiscal year the committee confirmed roughly $2,000 is available to support the boot camp, and the $5,000 figure reflects an increased allocation for the next fiscal year once budgets are finalized. Committee members discussed how marketing and registration expenses had previously dipped into the seminar budget to cover ad buys; under the revised plan, the committee intends to use the dedicated marketing pool instead so the seminar budget is preserved.
The group also debated venue suitability. Staff reported the town-managed venue under consideration caps attendees at 75 and requires IDs at check-in, which would complicate on-site registrations and limit walk-ins. One EDC member noted the access requirements and said the venue “makes you every person that walks in there has to give them their ID, and that's gonna delay the process of people checking in and checking out.” Committee members identified two viable options: hold the boot camp at the town chamber/council chambers or a private venue, and staff will confirm availability and final logistics.
A staff member emphasized the importance of scheduling and confirmed they would follow up with venue contacts and provide a venue recommendation at the next meeting. The committee decided to table any final venue selection until the next meeting after staff verifies capacity, check-in procedures and whether an alternate site can accommodate more than 75 attendees.
No formal vote to lock a venue was taken; the committee set tasks for staff and for the boot camp lead to return with confirmed venue options and a detailed budget breakdown at the next meeting.
