Commission approves Terraces at Windward mural after modification to paint dumpster gates

Seelig Enterprises representative Greg Cote presented the revised imagery and said the artist updated the design to show native Georgia plants — azaleas, dogwoods and asters — and softened the edges of the composition after the commission’s earlier review. Commissioners and staff discussed how the brick wall texture will affect the final appearance and how the mural will be applied over uneven brick; Cote said the paint will reflect the wall’s texture and the brick will show through in places.
Commissioners asked about maintenance and anti‑vandal coatings; staff and the applicant confirmed a sealant will be applied. One commissioner asked specifically whether the varnish would make the surface slippery; the artist had answered earlier in the meeting, “no, it will not be slippery,” and explained the finish planned was low sheen.
When the commission first voted on the proposal as presented, that motion failed by a 4–2 vote. After further discussion the commission considered a second motion to approve the mural with the specific modification that the dumpster gate doors be painted in a similar palette so they do not draw undue attention. That modified motion passed unanimously.
The commission’s approval requires the applicant to implement the agreed change; the pass/fail sequence and the final, amended approval were recorded during the meeting.
