The Nantucket Historic District Commission on Tuesday reviewed a multistructure application for two adjacent lots on Tripp Drive and asked the applicant for additional information while approving smaller outbuildings.
The project covers three linked structures: a working stable with horse runouts, a carriage house/shed and a garage. Holly (preservation planner, Town of Nantucket) and the project architect described material choices and site planning; the commission requested a comprehensive site plan showing how the multiple lots and new structures relate in context before acting on the larger stable design.
Steve Ackman (architect) presented revised elevations and explained the team simplified corbels and detailing, removed multiple cupolas, and proposed natural‑to‑weather board‑and‑batten siding with a bronze‑colored standing seam roof for the stable. He said runouts and galvanized or bronze panels were proposed in some service areas to resist equine wear: “On the back where the horses have the runout, you need to put usually, when we do stables, either a galvanized or a copper or a bronze panels because otherwise, they just destroy shingles,” Ackman said.
Jamie Field (agent) and the applicant said the smaller garden shed and carriage house were intended to screen the view of the stable from the road; commissioners and advisory commenters asked for a combined site plan showing the “sister” lot and how hedges and screening would affect visibility from Tripp Drive and neighboring properties. Several commissioners said the stable would be largely hidden by year‑round planting but asked for the plan to confirm sight lines and final materials.
The commission approved the garden shed and a revised garage with a condition to change white‑stained board‑and‑batten to natural weathering siding per staff, and to return with simplified detailing for final approval of the main stable. A motion to hold the main barn/stable for revisions and additional information carried; staff will request a master site plan, clearer material callouts (including where metal panels are proposed), and simplified monitor/ornamentation details for the stable’s elevations.
Next steps: the applicant will provide a combined site plan for both lots, clarified material samples (especially for metal panels in service areas), and simplified elevation details for the main stable to address commissioners’ concerns about scale, fenestration and ornamentation. The shed and garage approvals will proceed with the COA conditions agreed on at the meeting.
