District finance staff warns of state 'funding cliff' in recalibration discussions

Finance staff said recalibration meetings include legislators and that Tim Salazar, a state senator representing Fremont County, is co-chair of the recalibration committee. “He asked me what is the number 1 thing for Du Bois? ... the thing that I told them today is this funding cliff in the high school has to be resolved,” the staff member said. Staff described the potential shortfall as anywhere “from a 5 to a 7% it it could even be 8% of our budget that funding cliff can.”
Staff recounted that the district previously experienced an early hold-harmless action that reduced an obligation tied to the recalibration process; staff said legislation included a hold-harmless provision that prevented a full $325,000 payment in the past instance. The staff member said the district will pursue conversations with committee members and is preparing to present specific data at upcoming meetings to illustrate the fiscal impact on small districts like Du Bois.
Board members asked no substantive follow-up questions during the report; staff said they will bring any legislative or budget results back to the board as recalibration work continues.
