Waynesboro council authorizes condemnation to acquire stormwater pond parcel

Waynesboro City Council unanimously adopted a resolution on May 27 authorizing the use of condemnation to acquire approximately 2.26 acres that contain a storm-water management facility after voluntary acquisition efforts did not succeed.
The city attorney told council the parcel (tax map reference 54-1-17A) had been the subject of earlier public hearings and that staff had been unable to make progress on a voluntary purchase. "We have not been able to make progress on the voluntary acquisition of this land," the attorney said, explaining condemnation was being retained as an option to acquire the needed stormwater facility.
Council member Sloat moved to adopt the resolution and Council member Short seconded. The resolution passed on a unanimous voice vote, 5-0.
The resolution directs city staff and legal counsel to use condemnation as an available tool to acquire the parcel; council did not discuss specific acquisition offers or compensation figures at the meeting.
