City approves $61,978 artificial-turf replacement at Lions Club Park

The Odessa City Council on the evening agenda approved the purchase and installation of new artificial turf at Lions Club Park after storm damage, at a cost of $61,978.57 drawn from the park's existing budget.
City staff said the replacement turf includes a 15-year warranty; staff also reported separate, smaller repairs at Jim Parker Park that will cost a little over $2,000. During discussion staff noted the Jim Parker site has a steep slope and a caliche base and would have benefited from a concrete base, which contributed to its maintenance issues.
Council members moved and seconded the measure and the council approved the purchase. Staff said the funds are available in the park budget and recommended the replacement proceed so the park can reopen without the storm-damaged surface.
City staff who presented the item described the Lions Club Park location as a neighborhood park behind the mall on Second Street and Wendover. Council members asked about warranties and comparable repairs at Jim Parker Park during the discussion; staff responded that the new turf carries the longer warranty and that the Jim Parker repair is a separate, smaller work item.
The council voted to approve the turf replacement; the motion carried and staff will proceed with procurement and installation under the park budget.
