Volunteer fire department seeks matching funds; supervisors approve volunteer and county insurance renewals

Dale Mullins, chief of a volunteer fire department, asked the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors for help to complete purchase of a water skid for a pickup truck.
Mullins said the department had obtained a $5,000 donation restricted to the skid, had spent about $18,000 on a brush truck that has been out of service for two years, and planned to sell that vehicle to help fund the skid. He requested that the board either match the donation or contribute toward the balance so the skid — already ordered — can be put into service.
Board members thanked Mullins and discussed the department’s needs but did not approve a county appropriation during the meeting. Several supervisors suggested the chief seek donations and noted individual supervisors could offer funds from personal discretionary accounts.
On a related agenda item, county staff presented renewal quotes for insurance coverage. The board approved a renewal for volunteer fire and rescue insurance with a premium of $133,223, which covers volunteer injury and equipment, and includes rescue squads. The board also approved the county’s property, liability, workers’ compensation, cyber and crime insurance renewal with a premium of $272,294.
County administrators said the renewal figures were roughly in line with the prior year’s costs and that staff would continue to work with the insurer to manage coverage and risk.
No further appropriations for the water‑skid purchase were made at the meeting; Mullins was advised to continue fundraising and to coordinate with the county on any future requests.
