Board approves school nursing contract after negotiated increase; district to study long-term options

The Wayne County Board of Education approved the district's school nursing contract for the coming year after negotiations reduced a proposed increase from the provider.
Finance staff told the board the health-care partner approached the district seeking a substantial increase in compensation but agreed to reduce that request during negotiations so the district can sustain the program. The total billable for the upcoming contract was presented as $1,700,000 after applying an $82,700 credit and accounting for a separate state health-department allocation of $250,000 that funds five nurse positions.
Staff said the district will reduce its contracted nurse count by one, from 19 nurses plus a nurse supervisor to 18 nurses plus a supervisor, citing enrollment declines since before the COVID-19 pandemic and the district’s current ADM. "The total billable for this upcoming contract would be 1,700,000.0, which is right in line with what we have paid the last 2 years," the presenter said. The presenter also said the district is beginning research into how other local education agencies manage school nursing because staff expect continued cost pressures.
The contract was reviewed by the district attorney and staff recommended approval. Board members asked for a signature-line update on the contract document and staff said the vice chair could sign as vice chair if needed.
The motion to approve the school nursing contract passed on a 4–1 vote.
