Wayne County board approves purchase orders for two high-school tracks and an activity bus

The Wayne County Board of Education approved three purchase orders to begin fiscal-year projects, including resurfacing tracks at Southern Wayne High School and Rosewood High School and buying an activity bus.

Dr. Harrell, presenting the facilities committee report, told the board that GeoSurfaces was the recommended vendor and that the Southern Wayne High School project is for a six-lane track at $237,680 while Rosewood High School is an eight-lane track at $376,890. "You have 3 purchase orders coming to you for approval for this coming fiscal year," Dr. Harrell said during his presentation.

The resurfacing work is funded in part by SCIF grant funds; the facilities committee selected option 2, described as a collegiate-level urethane "sandwich system" surface. The committee reported the option carries the longest warranty and an expected life of at least 15 years with proper maintenance. Contracts have been sent for legal review and, pending that review, the board was told the contracts would be returned for final approval at the July meeting so rubberization can begin in time for the upcoming athletic season.

The third purchase order approved was for an activity bus from White's International for $158,500, to be paid from capital fund 4. Board members were told activity buses are purchased and owned by Wayne County Public Schools and assigned to schools by the district transportation office; newer activity buses are typically assigned to high schools for longer out-of-county trips.

The facilities committee also noted other capital work under consideration — including Sutherland High School bleacher replacement and an RFQ posted for an architect for an eight-classroom addition at Rosewood Elementary — but those items did not require board action at the meeting.

The motion to accept the facilities committee report and the purchase orders was approved by the board.
