Council approves WHKS contract for municipal engineering; staff cite local presence and transition support

The Nevada City Council approved a professional services agreement with WHKS and Company to provide municipal engineering services for the city.
City staff said WHKS offers local personnel and an engineer with prior municipal experience near Nevada. Staff called that local presence a benefit because those individuals could respond quickly to projects. "There's a couple people from that firm that live here in town, and then one of the engineers that we're going to be working with has previous city engineering experience...so we'll have someone here very close," a staff presenter said.
Staff also discussed the transition from the prior engineering provider and noted that approximately 14 years of project documentation will need to be transferred. WHKS told staff it would cooperate in assembling and sharing needed documentation; staff said the city already has substantial records but expects additional materials to come from WHKS as part of the transition.
Councilors moved and seconded the contract approval; the council voted to pass the agreement. Staff said WHKS will support ongoing projects including the wastewater treatment facility and planned trail work and that contact relationships with the prior engineer would continue where necessary.
Next steps: Staff will coordinate document transfer and begin assigning day‑to‑day engineering tasks to WHKS staff in accordance with the contract.
