William (Bill) Miller, a resident and landscape designer, used the public comment period at the June 23 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting to urge the city to allow plantings to grow fuller, to hire trained landscape contractors, and to prioritize pollinator‑friendly plants in public planters and medians.
“I ask you all to take time to look at the gardens around the new Agwood Caliente Museum... Our pollinator critters love this,” Miller said. He contrasted the lush plantings at that site with the sparse landscaping at the convention center and urged staff to “stop cutting them to death and killing them. Please hire competent, trained contractor.”
Miller suggested the city revive a low‑cost tree program the parks department formerly ran, offering a selection of smaller trees for about $25 to residents for pickup or delivery. He proposed potential planting locations including James O’Jesse and the park planters along Indian Canyon, Sunrise and the new Sunrise bridge areas. Miller also recommended converting some grassy areas around the airport to meadow gardens to support monarch butterflies.
Miller concluded by urging the commission to support pollinators and to consider community tree distribution as a fall or next‑year program. The commission did not take action on the suggestions during the meeting; the remarks were offered during the public comment period and will be considered as part of ongoing parks maintenance and planning.
