187th District docket: multiple pleas, revocations and resets; several defendants sentenced or ordered held

Judge Stephanie Boyd convened the 187th District Court docket to call cases, consider pleas and address motions, issuing several sentences, revocations and scheduling orders.

The most immediate decisions came in revocation and plea hearings. In State v. Gabriel Antonio Sosa (20239149), after the court found a supervision violation true, Sosa chose revocation; the court revoked community supervision and sentenced him to three years in prison, with credit for time served and a request that he be placed in a therapeutic community program. Judge Boyd told Sosa, "These are your only two choices," before the defendant elected revocation over remaining in custody while awaiting a treatment placement.

Also during the docket, Jose Morales Jr. pleaded no contest to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The court accepted the plea and sentenced Morales to three years in prison, imposed a $2,000 fine and requested placement in a therapeutic community; Morales waived his right to appeal as part of the plea process.

On a bond matter, John Anthony Martinez — who faced a motion to revoke on an underlying probation case — asked the court to set bond so he could address a newly filed reckless-driving charge. The court set bond at $20,000, ordered no driving and required 30 sober meetings in 30 days; the court recalled the matter for a contested hearing in 10 days.
