Board reviews strategic plan; enforcement committee reports 1,550 inspections and regulatory progress

At its June 20 meeting the Board of Pharmacy reviewed strategic objectives and the Enforcement and Compounding Committee reported progress including about 1,550 routine inspections and regulatory provisions included in the board’s sunset measure (AB 1503).
The California State Board of Pharmacy on June 20 reviewed its strategic plan and heard committee reports on progress toward enforcement, regulation and licensing objectives.
Maria Serpa, chair of the Enforcement and Compounding Committee, reported that inspectors have completed work toward the board’s four‑year inspection goal and said the board recently assigned approximately 1,550 routine inspections. She also reported that proposed amendments to Business and Professions Code sections were included in the board’s sunset measure, AB 1503, and that the board has implemented a new digital process to streamline investigations and reduce investigation timeframes.
Serpa said provisions to transition pharmacist practice toward a standard‑of‑care model are included in the sunset measure, and noted the board implemented a new learning management system to deliver continuing education, including required pharmacy-in-charge (PIC) training. She also flagged a strategic objective added in November 2024 to evaluate barriers to patient consultation that the committee plans to discuss further at a future meeting.
Other committee chairs reported steady progress across licensing, communications and organizational development objectives and did not recommend revisions to the strategic plan at this time.
No committee proposed new objectives at the June 20 review; the board will revisit the plan next year as scheduled.
