The Historic District Review Board voted on June 25 to set primary facades and status designations for 539 Garcia Street and its detached garage. The house is already classified as a contributing structure; the board designated the south elevation (the portico/porch side) as the primary façade.
Director Mokino explained the property’s history: the house dates to the 1940s as part of the Jose Dolores Garcia Estates subdivision and retains much of its original footprint aside from a bay window and a later rear addition. The garage, an adobe one‑car structure in matching Pueblo‑Revival materials, sits at the northwest corner of the lot.
The board also designated the accessory garage as contributing but decided the garage’s south façade (the street‑facing side) should be the primary façade for that structure, rather than the east elevation proposed in staff materials. The board excluded the nonhistoric garage door material from the primary‑facade designation.
The motion carried by roll‑call vote. The owner and the applicant team attended and affirmed their agreement with the designations.
The designations will be incorporated into the property record and used to guide any future design reviews for alterations to the house or garage.
