Dodge County supervisors declared a local state of emergency for tornadic weather on May 15 and heard a Human Services and Health Department report on the county's response, including sheltering, resource distribution and targeted follow-up for vulnerable residents.
Becky, a Human Services and Health Department staff member, told the board the department was notified about the need for a family assistance center at approximately 06:05 and set up sites at Dodgelyn School and the TAIG Center in Mayville. "I think we did a really good job. I might be a little biased, but I'm here to kind of talk to you about what it is that we did in response to, the natural disaster that occurred in our communities," Becky said.
The department recorded assistance to 51 Dodge County residents: 39 in the Juneau area and 12 in Mayville. Staff remained at the Dodgeland site until about 10:30 a.m. when the Red Cross arrived and at the Mayville site until around midnight. The Red Cross provided a trailer of supplies. Becky said staff identified about nine people who required more intensive case management; one family received hotel vouchers on a limited basis, one individual received gas gift cards, and three people received longer-term housing assistance.
A note provided to the department described the impact on one recipient: "The worst part was not knowing if I was going to have a roof over my head every night and you paying for my hotel stay was life saving. However, the most helpful was the first month's rent and security deposit." Becky read that message to the board.
The department also assisted public health outreach. Becky said the public health officer obtained names and addresses of oxygen-dependent residents from the state and provided that information to EMS so those individuals could be checked on. She reported the county's recently purchased public health response trailer sustained damage during the storm: "that trailer ' was located on 1 side of our parking lot. And after the tornado, it was on the opposite side of the parking lot and did sustain a fair amount of damage." She also thanked Dodgelyn School officials for providing snacks, water and activities for children at the family assistance center.
The board adopted Resolution 25-14, "Dodge County Declaration of Local State of Emergency Tornadic Weather Events 05/15/2025," on a voice vote recorded by the chair after a motion by Supervisor Guchenberger and a second by Supervisor Beal; the chair announced the resolution passed 27 to 0.
The report and the emergency declaration will be part of the official record; supervisors asked no substantive policy changes at the meeting and no additional formal actions were taken beyond adopting the emergency declaration.
