Hazard review committee flags sidewalks near Jackson School; board accepts committee status report

The Sheboygan Area School District Hazard Review Committee reported on pedestrian and transportation safety concerns around several school routes and recommended no immediate route changes while some nearby municipal construction proceeds.
Committee members said the area east of Jackson School remains hazardous because there is no sidewalk along the north side of Wheaton/Weeden Creek Road; a municipal project is installing sidewalk along that corridor up to 17th Street and is expected to finish in August, the committee said. Committee members noted that when sidewalks are absent the area is deemed hazardous for students and that classification makes affected students eligible for district transportation even if they live within the district’s 4‑mile walking zone.
A board member asked whether the Cleveland/Fleetlander area was considered hazardous; committee members said much of Cleveland was currently designated hazardous. The committee also noted its regular reviews of roads and the process for adding or removing hazardous designations when new subdivisions or sidewalks change walking conditions.
The board moved to accept the Hazard Review Committee’s status report; the motion carried.
