The Holland City Council on June 4 approved a 12-year Public Act 198 tax abatement for Cope’s Inc. to support a $2,000,000 expansion that adds about 15,000 square feet of production space and, the city says, retains 24 existing full-time jobs while projecting 24 new full-time positions.
Mark Myers, director of Community and Neighborhood Services, told the council the project is Cope’s fifth expansion since 2017 and that the company expects to complete the addition by August. "The project is actually done, and we're doing the ribbon cutting tomorrow," Cope’s representative Dave Jessup said, inviting council members to the 1 p.m. ceremony.
The abatement covers new real property investment under Public Act 198; city staff recommended approval after the required public hearing produced no speakers. Councilmember Byrd moved to approve; Councilmember Sowell supported the motion. City Clerk Van Dyken conducted a roll-call vote with all present members voting yes, and the motion passed.
Company representatives said the added space will expand the firm’s machining area and house CNC milling machines. Cope’s serves customers across North America, including the automotive sector, the company said.
Councilmember Shea asked whether Cope’s clients were regional or national; a company representative said Cope’s operates sites in Michigan, the Carolinas and Mexico and serves customers across North America. Councilmember Soule asked for clarification on hiring; company representatives said some interns have been converted to employees and the projected 24 new hires will be added over several years.
The council record shows the abatement term set at 12 years and an expected completion in August; no appeals or amendments were reported at the meeting.
