Commissioners approve sheriff pay boost; debate over countywide raises and funding continues

The Williamson County Board of Commissioners voted to increase pay for the sheriff’s department and later approved an amendment extending market adjustments to most county employees, setting off hours of debate about funding and long-term staffing strategy.

The action began when Commissioner Drew Torres proposed adding $1,095,427 to public safety line items to move deputy pay toward the 75th percentile; he placed the change as an amendment to the fiscal 2025–26 budget resolution. Torres said, “I’d like to make a motion for line item 5 4 1 1 0 sheriff's department to increase it by 1.275, which will take the sheriff's pay to the 70 fifth percentile,” and the commission voted to add the funding to the sheriff’s budget and related salary lines.

Why it matters: Commissioners and county leaders said rising turnover and recruitment challenges in law enforcement and other departments require market adjustments now to avoid losing experienced employees.
