East Bridgewater students showcase VEX robotics at school committee meeting

East Bridgewater students and faculty presented the district's inaugural VEX robotics entry to the School Committee on June 18, sharing lessons learned from a recent competition.
The presentation, led by faculty members identified in the meeting as Mr. Ferioli and Mr. Stevens and coordinated by Mr. Shea, described the team’s travel to a VEX event and the iterative technical work students did to improve the robot’s performance. Students said they adjusted elastic bands and added a second motor to increase arm strength and reliability, changes that helped the team place 12th out of 30 teams in the event.
“Just because the robot that will compete in the competition, it can do a small part of the competition. It’s up to you to modify the robot to be able to do more of the competition,” a student said during the presentation. Faculty credited community hosts at Oakmont Regional and other teams for hands-on support during the event.
Committee members praised the students and the staff who supported the program, noting the collaboration between physics and tech-ed/manufacturing programs. The presenters said most team members were incoming ninth-graders, and faculty said they expect interest to grow now that the program has run its first year.
The committee did not take formal action on the presentation; members received the report and offered congratulations.
